INTRODUCTION TO EXODUS 37

This chapter continues the account of the making of the tabernacle, and the furniture of it, particularly the ark, mercy seat, and cherubim, Exodus 37:1 the shewbread table, and what appertained to that, Exodus 37:10 the candlestick, and all the vessels of it, Exodus 37:17 and the altar of incense, together with the anointing oil, and pure incense, Exodus 37:25.

Exodus 37:1  Then Bezalel made the ark of acacia wood; two and a half cubits was its length, a cubit and a half its width, and a cubit and a half its height.

   YLT  1And Bezaleel maketh the ark of shittim wood, two cubits and a half its length, and a cubit and a half its breadth, and a cubit and a half its height;

Verses 1-29

And Bezaleel made the ark of shittim wood,.... Jarchi says, because he gave his mind to this work more than the rest of the wise men, it is called by his name. It is a notion of some Jewish writers that the ark was made by Bezaleel, without the help of others; but there is no sufficient reason to be given for it; for other things are equally ascribed to him in this and the following chapter, as the mercy seat with the cherubim, the shewbread table, the candlestick of pure gold, the two altars, the laver of brass, with other things, which are only said to be made by him, because they were made by his direction, and he having the oversight of them while making; wherefore Aben Ezra observes, that this is particularly said for the glory of the ark. Of the ark, and all other things mentioned in this chapter; see Gill on Exodus 25:1 &c. to end of chapter; see Gill on Exodus 30:1 &c. to end of chapter.

Exodus 37:2  2 He overlaid it with pure gold inside and outside, and made a molding of gold all around it.

   YLT  2and he overlayeth it with pure gold within and without, and maketh for it a wreath of gold round about;

Exodus 37:3  3 And he cast for it four rings of gold to be set in its four corners: two rings on one side, and two rings on the other side of it.

   YLT  3and he casteth for it four rings of gold, on its four feet, even two rings on its one side, and two rings on its second side;

Exodus 37:4  4 He made poles of acacia wood, and overlaid them with gold.

   YLT  4and he maketh staves of shittim wood, and overlayeth them with gold,

Exodus 37:5  5 And he put the poles into the rings at the sides of the ark, to bear the ark.

   YLT  5and he bringeth in the staves into the rings, by the sides of the ark, to bear the ark.

Exodus 37:6  6 He also made the mercy seat of pure gold; two and a half cubits was its length and a cubit and a half its width.

   YLT  6And he maketh a mercy-seat of pure gold, two cubits and a half its length, and a cubit and a half its breadth;

Exodus 37:7  7 He made two cherubim of beaten gold; he made them of one piece at the two ends of the mercy seat:

Exodus 37:8  8 one cherub at one end on this side, and the other cherub at the other end on that side. He made the cherubim at the two ends of one piece with the mercy seat.

   YLT  8one cherub at the end on this [side], and one cherub at the end on that, out of the mercy-seat he hath made the cherubs, at its two ends;

Exodus 37:9  9 The cherubim spread out their wings above, and covered the mercy seat with their wings. They faced one another; the faces of the cherubim were toward the mercy seat.

   YLT  9and the cherubs are spreading out wings on high, covering over the mercy-seat with their wings, and their faces [are] one towards another; towards the mercy-seat have the faces of the cherubs been.

Exodus 37:10  10 He made the table of acacia wood; two cubits was its length, a cubit its width, and a cubit and a half its height.

   YLT  17And he maketh the candlestick of pure gold; of beaten work he hath made the candlestick, its base, and its branch, its calyxes, its knops, and its flowers, have been of the same;

Exodus 37:18  18 And six branches came out of its sides: three branches of the lampstand out of one side, and three branches of the lampstand out of the other side.

   YLT  19three calyxes, made like almonds, in the one branch, a knop and a flower; and three calyxes, made like almonds, in another branch, a knop and a flower; so to the six branches which are coming out of the candlestick.
